Saladino Seeks Nominations to Honor Veterans as Memorial Day Parades Get Cancelled Throughout Region

With Memorial Day events throughout our region being cancelled due to COVID-19, the Town of Oyster Bay is seeking to honor veterans in a special way at a future event. The Town typically hosts a ‘Salute to America’ ceremony as part of its Music Under the Stars Concert Series, at which time honorees are celebrated with Veterans of the Year Awards. With uncertainty from New York State surrounding summer events, Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to submit nominations in three veteran-related categories. Recipients will be honored in a special way at a future Town event.

“In these uncertain times, I wanted to make sure we found an especially meaningful way to recognize those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. This holds special significance this year, as most Memorial Day activities are cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town of Oyster Bay invites residents to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a difference in our veteran communities. An important part of the celebration includes the Town’s Veteran Volunteer Awards, which honors our veterans and those who advocate on their behalf.”

Nominations are being accepted in three different categories of recognition: Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a veteran), Friend of Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a non-veteran), and Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to a veteran or a non-veteran).  All entries must include a supporting narrative describing the nominee’s on-going veterans related activities, and all nominees must be Town residents.

“With this great nation coming together to face COVID-19, honoring our veterans carries an especially poignant message of unity and our love of freedom. The Town is proud to recognize and honor amazing individuals who have helped to shape our communities for the better through their continuing advocacy and exemplary community service each year,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I hope residents will consider submitting a nomination of an individual who deserves special recognition for their continued efforts on behalf of the veteran’s community. I look forward to recognizing the efforts of outstanding individuals who have impacted the lives of our veterans in an extraordinary way, especially in a year where so many of us have gained a greater appreciation of our freedom and all of the things that unite us as a Nation.”
