To continue the fight against the opioid epidemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announces that the Town will host a free Narcan Training Seminar for residents on Wednesday, March 16th at 11am in Oyster Bay. The training session will be offered in partnership with Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and the Department of Human Services. Pre-registration is required.
“In the Town of Oyster Bay, we have made addressing the ongoing opioid issue on Long Island among our top priorities, working with many organizations to help spread awareness, learn warning signs of drug addiction and gather information on available treatment options,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “We hope our residents join us for this important seminar, where they can learn how to safely and effectively reverse the fatal effects of an opioid overdose by administering a life-saving antidote.”
The overdose reversal agent known as Narcan is administered through a nasal spray, and will be provided free of charge by the Nassau County Department of Human Services to those who successfully complete the course. Under New York State law, residents can administer Narcan in an attempt to save a life, without fear of liability.
“Every day, at least one Long Islander dies from an opiate overdose, and those are only the ones we know of,” added County Executive Blakeman. “Out of every 10 deaths, about 7 die at home. Overdoses can happen to anyone, and anyone can help reverse it. Together, through initiatives like this, we can help save lives and keep families whole.”
This free Overdose Prevention & Narcan Training Seminar is available to all residents. No prior medical experience is necessary to participate. All trainees will receive a Certificate of Completion and Narcan kit following class completion. This seminar will take place at the Oyster Bay Community Center, located at 59 Church Street in Oyster Bay. Anyone can attend, but seating is limited and pre-registration is required.
