Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Town will host a Humanitarian Relief Drive and Peace Vigil in support of the Ukrainian people. From March 7th through March 25th, residents are asked to donate medical supplies, personal hygiene items, and non-perishable food at Town facilities, and are also invited to attend Long Island’s largest Candlelight Peace Vigil on Tuesday, March 8th at 6 p.m. at Saint Josaphat’s Monastery, 1 East Beach Drive in Lattingtown. Ukrainian Monks will lead the peace rally with local officials.
“When a crisis strikes, we must help, support, and provide aide to those affected,” said Supervisor Saladino. “While these acts of terror are taking place thousands of miles around the globe, the call to service and urge to make a difference is strong within our community. That’s why we have announced two opportunities, a Humanitarian Relief Drive and Peace Vigil, for residents to directly support the people of Ukraine and make a tangible impact.”
Through its Humanitarian Relief Drive, the Town will collect life-sustaining items to ship to Ukraine. These critically-needed goods include personal hygiene items (soap bars, toothpaste, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, brushes) and medical supplies (bandaids, gauze, wipes, surgical kits, wound care supplies, PPE), as well as blankets and non-perishable food. Residents are asked to bring these items to Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay), Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa), or the Town Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage) from 9:00 a.m to 4:45 p.m. through March 25th. Residents can also make monetary donations online by visiting http://pomagam.pl/f7fpmf or https://support.crs.org/donate/donate-ukraine. These two resources are verified to be providing aide both to Ukrainians and Ukrainian refugees in Poland.
The Town’s Peace Vigil will take place on Tuesday, March 8th at 6 p.m. at Saint Josaphat’s Monastery, located at 1 E. Beach Drive in Lattingtown. This Candlelight Program will feature opportunities for quiet reflection, religious readings, and a community call for peace.
“We urge residents to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine by standing together at our Candlelight Peace Vigil and contributing to our humanitarian relief drive. As Americans, we must unite in support of Ukraine and her people, coming together in the name of peace and honoring the victims of this tragic violence,” Supervisor Saladino concluded.
