Town Recognizes National Service Dog Month with DogFest to Help Residents with Disabilities

In recognition of National Service Dog Month, Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced today that this Saturday, September 23rd, the Town will join forces with Canine Companions for Independence to host DogFest Long Island 2017.

“This is a wonderful event for such a good cause in the Town of Oyster Bay,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This family and dog-friendly event features a fun, one-mile walk, demonstrations, a dog parade and even a costume contest.  Participants can enjoy these wonderful and fun activities while supporting the life changing mission of Canine Companions for Independence in our community.”

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. by the gazebo at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The walk kicks off at 11:30 a.m. While there is no registration fee for the event, residents are encouraged to fundraise and make a donation to participate. Other event-day activities include an agility course, rally, graduate and sponsor speakers, vendors, and many photo opportunities.

“Every dollar donated to Canine Companions makes a difference and helps the mission of providing highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities, free of charge,” Councilman Hand added.

“Thanks to events like DogFest Walk ‘n Roll, Canine Companions for Independence is able to continue providing our highly trained assistance dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities,” Executive Director of Canine Companions for Independence Debra Dougherty said.  “We are so pleased to have the support of Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand and our long-standing partnership with the Town of Oyster Bay.  So grab your leash, and get ready to have a tail-waggin’ good time this Saturday!”

Dogs are welcome to attend event, and must be leashed and up to date on all vaccinations. Dogs attending must be social and friendly with other dogs and people.  For more information, please visit www.cci.org.
