Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz to place 25,000 adult clams into Town waterways. These clams complement the millions of baby seedlings that the Town plants throughout the year after growing them out in the shellfish hatchery.

 

“Our shellfish planting program not only helps enhance water quality, it bolsters the local economy and helps improve the resiliency of our coastal communities,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Shellfish are essential to our waters and local marine environment, as they filter water through their feeding mechanisms.”

 

Throughout the year, officials work in cooperation with environmental experts to identify appropriate areas where seeds and adult shellfish will thrive and spawn. Whether planting clams or oysters, proper bay bottom substrate is sought out to ensure optimal growth.

 

“This wonderful initiative not only preserves water quality and natural beauty of our waterways, it helps to strengthen the local economy and keep our waters clean for generations to come,” said Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz.
