Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto today announced that a long-vacant and deteriorated house on Carrie Avenue in Bethpage has now been demolished following years of legal proceedings and Town enforcement efforts aimed at protecting neighborhood quality of life and public safety.
More than a decade ago, the Town began receiving complaints regarding the property. A major renovation project had been started but never completed despite numerous extensions granted to the property owner. Over time, the partially constructed structure fell into a severe state of disrepair, creating ongoing concerns for nearby residents.
“The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to protecting our neighborhoods,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This was a long and difficult process, but we remained committed to enforcing our codes and standing up for residents to protect and preserve their quality of life.”
The Town issued summonses and Notices of Violation and retained an outside engineering consultant to evaluate the structure. The consultant determined that the property was in violation of Town Code requirements. In or around 2014, the property owner commenced litigation against the Town and several Town employees in their individual capacities. The case continued for many years through motions and delays, limiting the Town’s ability to proceed with enforcement action while the matter remained pending. In December 2025, following a jury trial, a defense verdict was rendered in favor of the Town. Following the favorable verdict, the Town initiated legal proceedings to demolish the remaining structure. Shortly thereafter, the property owner retained a demolition contractor and obtained a demolition permit for the site. The structure was demolished approximately one week ago.
“Residents pay a lot to live on Long Island, and we all deserve clean, safe and well-maintained neighborhoods,” Councilman Imbroto added. “We will continue to aggressively pursue enforcement actions when abandoned or unsafe properties threaten the character and safety of our neighborhoods.”
