New York State Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz recently secured a New York State grant providing the Town with $130,000 for the purchase of a new 19-21 workboat to assist in the Town’s ongoing efforts in shellfish restoration. In recent years, the Town has increased its shellfish seeding program from less than 5 million to upwards of more than 20 million per year, including those grown out of the Town’s shellfish hatchery at Theodore Roosevelt Park.
“Our shellfish planting program not only helps enhance water quality, it also bolsters the local economy and helps improve the resiliency of our coastal communities,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This generous grant donation from Assemblyman Blumencranz will greatly assist our efforts in protecting the local marine environment and improving water quality.”
Throughout the year, officials work in cooperation with environmental experts to identify appropriate areas where seeds and adult shellfish will thrive and spawn on both the Town’s north and south shores. Whether planting clams or oysters, proper bay bottom substrate is sought out to ensure optimal growth.
“Shellfish are essential to our waterways, and the Town’s shellfish seeding program not only helps replenish the population, it helps keep our waters clean for generations to come,” said Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz.
