Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino will host a Black History Month celebration on February 22nd at 6:30pm at Oyster Bay Town Hall. The celebration will spotlight the lives of extraordinary African Americans – both past and present – and feature presentations from several leaders of the African-American community in Nassau County.
“We are proud to announce that this year’s Black History Month celebration will also include a special tribute to Civil War Veteran David Carll, a free black man from Oyster Bay, who volunteered in 1884 to serve in the 26th NY United States Colored Infantry Regiment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We invite all residents to join us as we commemorate the service of this Hometown Hero, as well as the continued contributions of the many African Americans who make the Town of Oyster Bay such a special place.”
Speakers and honorees will include Lionel Chitty, the Executive Director of the Nassau County Department of Minority Affairs; Dr. Denice Evans-Sheppard, of the Oyster Bay Historical Society; Carol Gordon, community leader; Phyllis Hill Slater, of LIDC and LISBAC; and Dr. Danielle Lee, professor at SUNY Old Westbury. These civic and community leaders will speak to the importance of celebrating Black History Month and the continued fight for equality.
