Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that a three-day long Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course will be available to residents who are interested in working for the Town as a lifeguard this summer. The course will be held Wednesday, July 27th through Friday, July 29th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Bethpage Community Park.
“In the Town of Oyster Bay, we pride ourselves on having the best lifeguards on all of Long Island,” said Supervisor Saladino. “If you’re interested in joining our incredible lifeguarding team this summer, then I encourage you to take this crash course and fast track your way to this fun and vital summer job.”
Participants must be at least 15 years old and bring proof of age, a bathing suit, towel, goggles, water and lunch. Attendance at all three sessions is mandatory to pass the course. To qualify, candidates must be physically capable of the following:
- Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Goggles may be used.
- Tread water for 2 minutes.
- Complete the following timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards without goggles
- Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface of the water.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Registration closes July 22nd and class size will be limited to 20 participants. There will be an American Red Cross fee of $41 for the entire three-day course. For any questions and to register for the course, please call the Town of Oyster Bay Aquatics at (516) 797-4131.
