In continuing the fight against the opioid epidemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that the Town will host a free Narcan Training Seminar for residents on Tuesday, May 17th, beginning at 7 p.m. in Massapequa. The training session, offered by Drug Free Long Island in partnership with LICADD (Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence), will be held at the North Massapequa Community Center.
“Our Town has worked diligently to help address the ongoing opioid crisis on Long Island, making it one of our top priorities,” said Councilwoman Maier. “In partnership with local organizations and various levels of law enforcement, we work to help spread awareness, learn warning signs of drug addiction and gather information on available treatment options. This seminar provides a great opportunity to learn how to safely and effectively reverse the fatal effects of an opioid overdose by administering a life-saving antidote, a skill we all hope we never have to use.”
The overdose reversal agent known as Narcan is administered through a nasal spray, and will be provided free of charge by the Nassau County Department of Human Services to those who successfully complete the course the evening of May 17th. Under New York State law, residents can administer Narcan in an attempt to save a life, without fear of liability.
This free Overdose Prevention & Narcan Training Seminar is available to all residents. No prior medical experience is necessary to participate. Training will also include instruction on use of fentanyl test strips. All trainees will receive a Certificate of Completion and Narcan kit following class completion. Anyone can attend, but seating is limited and pre-registration is encouraged. Sign up by emailing info@drugfreeli.org or by calling (516) 639-2386.
