Saladino, Alesia Announce Put Bullying on Ice Awareness Night at Ice Skating Center

In recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia announce a “Put Bullying on Ice” Awareness Night.  The event will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on Saturday, October 6th from 7pm – 9pm during the public skate session.  Free admission and skate rentals are offered for all students and families who reside in the Town of Oyster Bay.  The Ice Skating Center’s concessionaire will offer a 25% discount for all purchases.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with residents and the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying and Long Island Crisis Center to raise awareness, enhance dialogue among children about the dangers associated with bullying and recognize the need for education and commitment to prevent this type of behavior.  Together, we will put bullying on ice and strengthen the bonds of our community.”

The event – sponsored by the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying, Long Island Crisis Center and organized by Plainview resident Asha John – also offers free information and resources for residents seeking additional information.  The Town of Oyster Bay and Long Island Coalition Against Bullying will also host a “Parents Night” later this fall to provide residents a free workshop and public forum to discuss the issue of bullying.

“Together as a community, we will unite for acceptance while pledging to create a kinder world without bullying,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “As a fellow Plainview mom, I commend Asha John and her family for turning a negative experience into such a positive night for our community.  When we stand together, no one stands alone.”

In December 2017, the son of Plainview resident, Asha John, experienced an unfortunate bullying situation while enjoying an evening of skating in Bethpage.  The Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department took immediate action to address this issue and worked in collaboration with Ms. John to develop a “Put Bullying on Ice” Awareness Night.
