Few people are aware of the depth and breadth of the role the Town Attorney’s Office plays in both Town government and the lives of Town residents. Almost every phase of government requires legal services, and the Town Attorney’s Office is on call 24 hours a day to the Town’s other departments and to special boards established by the Town.
Comprising the General Services, Law, and Litigation Divisions, this office prepares and reviews all legislation for the Town Board, represents Oyster Bay in all legal proceedings and litigation, and prepares and processes contracts and insurance policies. In addition, this office reviews all petitions for zoning changes and special use permits, as well as other matters that come before the Town Board.
The Town Attorney’s Office litigates thousands of District Court cases each year and handles Supreme Court and Appellate Court matters related to the Town. In addition, the Town Attorney and his staff administer the Town’s self-insurance program and respond in both written and oral form to countless legal inquiries made daily by residents, officials and Town personnel.
