Town to Host Special Olympics Spring Games with Massapequa Schools

Over 700 Athletes to Compete in an Olympic-Style Contest on May 2nd

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will once again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held this year in partnership with Massapequa Schools, the event will take place at Berner Middle School on Saturday, May 2nd. The games will include a full day of competitive track and field events for over 700 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes – children and adults with intellectual disabilities – have dedicated months to training for an Olympic-style competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games.

“The Special Olympic Spring Games provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of these special athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differently-abled individuals face,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and thank the Massapequa School District for their assistance in making this year’s event a great success.”

“We are honored to host the Special Olympics New York Spring Games and to partner with Special Olympics New York and the Town of Oyster Bay to make this event possible,” said Superintendent of Massapequa School District Dr. William Brennan. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and community to witness firsthand the power of sports to inspire, unite and celebrate the abilities of all individuals.”

The event will be held on Saturday, May 2nd at Berner Middle School, 50 Carman Mill Road in Massapequa. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. For more information, visit the school district’s website at www.msd.k12.ny.us to see on how to get involved in volunteering or sponsorship opportunities.
