As local neighbors watched in celebration, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and the Town’s Highway and Buildings crew to commence the demolition of a dilapidated zombie home on Alhambra Road in Massapequa. This longtime eyesore was recently granted for demolition following years of neglect and complaints from neighbors.
“This property has been cited with multiple violations for lack of maintenance and deplorable conditions after years of neglect,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Inspectors repeatedly found various signs of neglect, from severely damaged or even missing walls, to destroyed and collapsed ceilings, as well as overall deterioration. After earning court approval, we are removing this neighborhood eyesore and paving the way for a new home in our community.”
Town inspections discovered a variety of code violations, including overgrown vegetation, deterioration or lack of walls and/or insulation, debris strewn throughout both indoors and outside, damaged or missing ceilings, and overall deterioration. While the condition of the property worsened over time, the Town’s Quality of Life Taskforce continued all efforts to keep the property safe to the surrounding neighborhood while pursuing legal action.
“The great success of our Task Force really speaks for itself, as we’ve now successfully demolished more than 30 homes since its inception,” Supervisor Saladino added. “Through the diligence of our Town team – our building and legal professionals – we have been tremendously successful in saving our communities from these types of eyesores and protecting the quality of life of our residents.”
