With only five days until Christmas morning, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce President Francesca Carlow gathered with local merchants at the Morton Village Shopping Center in Plainview to remind residents of the benefits of buying locally this holiday season.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “Small businesses are the driving force of our economy and shopping local has a profoundly positive impact on our economy as its keeps your money local and supports local jobs. With five days until Christmas, the Chambers of Commerce and Town of Oyster Bay remind residents that supporting downtown businesses makes our neighborhoods stronger by keeping downtown storefronts open.”
The Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, an umbrella organization representing over 40 Chambers of Commerce, joined Supervisor Saladino in launching this “5 Days ‘til Chrismas” campaign to keep local dollars in the economy, support local jobs, build a strong tax base and ensure investments in the local community. While the popularity of online shopping continues to grow, it goes not support local merchant whom directly correlate with the vitality of our neighborhoods. Local merchants also support many community charities, sports organizations and endeavors that advance the general welfare.
“Statistics indicate that small businesses employ over half of all private sector employees and that two out of every three new jobs over the past 15 years have been generated by small businesses of 50 people or less,” Carlow said. “Local businesses also offer convenience for residents short on time during the holiday season. Additionally, shopping locally is a more environmentally friendly option as compared to the greater gas consumption and emissions generated from long car trips to box stores.”
Councilwoman Alesia stated, “As a small business owner myself, I am proud to stand with our local merchants and members of the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce to support our local merchants, which are the backbone of our vibrant communities in the Town of Oyster Bay. I ask you to join us in reminding people to Shop Local, Spend Local, Eat Local and Enjoy Local. It takes you to start the trend.”
