Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy, Legislator Rose Walker, and Legislator Samantha Goetz, in partnership with County Executive Bruce Blakeman, announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will receive a Community Revitalization Program Grant from Nassau County for shark prevention equipment at Town beaches. Through this grant, the Town will receive funds to purchase vital equipment such as water base drones, shark shields, and shark bands, as well as watercraft and watercraft prevention equipment to ensure the safety of beachgoers and all who enjoy the Town’s many waterways.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “The safety and protection of our residents is top priority as shark sightings continue to rise off our shores. We are grateful to Legislator Kennedy, Legislator Walker, Legislator Goetz, and County Executive Blakeman, as our exceptional beach staff will have the ability to utilize even more tools and equipment to safeguard beachgoers with this grant.”
Legislator Kennedy added, “While it may be unnerving to hear about shark sightings, it’s important to understand that sharks are naturally found in waters off Long Island. Remember to stay safe and listen to the guidance of beach and lifeguard staff. We share our waters with some amazing sea life, and we must make sure we do so safely and appropriately.”
While shark sightings off the coast of Long Island have increased in recent years, shark bites and attacks remain extremely rare. Officials emphasize that ongoing and enhanced monitoring, as well as beach safety protocols ensure the safety of swimmers while supporting marine life.
Legislator Walker said, “Keeping our beaches safe for families and visitors is a top priority, and this grant will provide the Town of Oyster Bay with additional resources to enhance public safety along our shoreline. This funding will help ensure that our beach personnel have the tools they need to respond quickly and effectively, giving residents and visitors greater peace of mind as they enjoy our beautiful waterfront.”
Legislator Goetz added, “As shark sightings become more frequent in our waters, it is important that we continue investing in proactive safety measures that protect everyone who visits our beaches. This grant will provide the Town of Oyster Bay with advanced shark detection and prevention equipment, helping lifeguards and emergency personnel keep beachgoers safe while preserving access to the incredible natural resources that make our South Shore so special.”
