Town Recognized as ‘Climate Smart Community’ by NYS

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that the Town has been named a ‘Climate Smart Community’ through a program sponsored by six New York State agencies, including the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The designation recognizes the Town’s commitment to take on environmental initiatives.  “Since I became Supervisor, we have made it a priority to transform this Town into a local leader in renewable energy initiatives, all of which help save taxpayer money,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We have been working diligently on various fronts to help mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I’m so proud that the Town has entered into this Climate Smart Communities Program, through which we will continue to bolster our efforts.” Since 2017, the Town has implemented and enhanced many new clean energy programs.  Increased efficiency is being achieved at Town facilities and on Town roadways through the installation of LED lighting. The Town was also recognized by NYSERDA for its issuance of solar panel permits through the new same-day permit process. This spring, the Town installed solar lighting systems on the top level of the Hicksville Commuter Parking Garage to save taxpayer dollars and reduce the Town’s carbon footprint, utilizing the latest technology on the market. Through the ‘Climate Smart Communities’ program, the Town makes a pledge to continue its ongoing efforts in implementing environmentally sustainable actions to benefit this and future generations. The pledge includes a commitment to inventory emissions and set goals, decrease energy use, enhance community resiliency and work to inform and inspire the public. Participation also assists the Town in obtaining/securing grant awards for environmental projects. “The protection of our environment is a top priority for me and my colleagues on the Town Board, and we’ve demonstrated our commitment in many ways,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our proven track record and continuing efforts show how Oyster Bay is paving the way for a brighter, cleaner and more renewable future.”
