Councilman Chris J. Coschignano was elected by the residents of the Town of Oyster Bay in 2001 to serve on the Town Board. The Oyster Bay Town Board represents the governing body and lawmaking authority for the 300,000 residents of the Town. He was re-elected by the residents in 2005, 2009, and most recently in 2013.
Prior to serving in elected office, Councilman Coschignano was appointed in 1995 by the Town of Oyster Bay Town Board to serve as Counsel to the Zoning Board of Appeals to oversee the operations and exclusively handle all municipal litigation involving the Zoning Board of Appeals. He served in this position until his election to the Town Board in 2001.
Councilman Coschignano is a strong fiscal conservative who, together with Town Supervisor John Venditto and the Town Board, works hard to make government efficient and provide quality public services at the lowest cost to taxpayers. He also believes in preserving the suburban character of the Town’s neighborhoods and knows the importance of proper planning to ensure against over-development. Councilman Coschignano was instrumental in the formation of the Syosset Downtown Revitalization and Redevelopment Plan; the Oyster Bay Hamlet Moratorium against over-development and helped obtain a $1.5 million grant for the Downtown Syosset Streetscape project. Mr. Coschignano currently serves as Chairman of Syosset Hamlet Revitalization and Redevelopment Plan Committee.
Councilman Coschignano, in his private business career, is a partner in Long Island law firm of Sahn Ward Coschignano, PLLC in Uniondale. He has been engaged in the general practice of law since 1990, and his emphasis has been in the areas of Real Estate, Land Use and Zoning; Municipal Law; Business, Corporate and Commercial Law; Trusts and Estates; Matrimonial and Family Law; and Personal Injury Defense Litigation. Mr. Coschignano has also been appointed by the Supreme Court of the State of New York to serve as a Court-appointed Receiver and Referee on a variety of matters.
Councilman Coschignano has represented such distinguished clientele as the United States of America, The Justice Department of the United States of America, The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, The Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority, The Town of Oyster Bay, and other municipal, public and private organizations.
Councilman Coschignano received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from St. John’s University in 1985 and his Juris Doctorate Degree from Touro College School of Law in 1990. Mr. Coschignano is also a member of the American Bar Association, Nassau County Bar Association, Nassau Lawyers’ Association and Columbian Lawyers’ Association.
Councilman Coschignano is a life-long resident of the Town of Oyster Bay and lives with his wife, Elisabetta, and children Isabella, Angelo and Luca in Muttontown. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Boys and Girls Club; an Honorary Director of the Syosset Chamber of Commerce; on the Advisory Board of the North Shore Boys and Girls Club; and is an Honorary Member of the Syosset Volunteer Fire Department.
The Councilman is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, The Sons of Italy, Syosset Rotary, The Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce, The Residents for a More Beautiful Syosset, The North Syosset Civic Association, The Italian American Club of Oyster Bay, The East Norwich Civic Association and attends religious services at St. Edward The Confessor Roman Catholic Church.
